Turn off those dam street lights.
Well as you can clearly see in this 180 degree panorama shot at the back of our garden the light pollution from the street light really washes out the night sky. This is the reason I was having so much trouble getting a decent shot of the milky way. It is just above the bright light on the left side of the picture. You can see that the sodium glare from the street lights washes out the Milky way from the bottom. SO the lesson is if you want a good shot of the Milky way get yourself as far away from street lights as possible and use a camera with a low noise rating. Mount the camera on a good tripod with a tracking motor on it and that should improve things.
